Sergeant Stokes is fondly remembered by his Marine Brothers from 1st Searchlight Battery.

Russell Duckworth

Friend: We both served with First Battalion Nineth Marines

1457 Miller Street
Biloxi,MS 39530 USA

Operation Buffalo: Stokes helped carry survivers of "B" Co. to the "Strip."
Sgt Stokes and myself were on "Forward Observer" duty in a 75 ft high wooden observation tower located at Camp Carol during the monsoon season of '67. Stokes talked of his most recent thirty day leave in the States where he'd met this girl that he intended on getting married to as soon as he returned. It was mentioned that she was with child, but, to Sgt. Stokes the most important aspect was that he was in love with the girl.Tuesday, December 14, 1999

Russell Duckworth
Friend: Both Sgt.Stakes and I served with 1/9 Marines

1457 Miller
Biloxi,MS 39530 USA

On 2nd July '67, Stokes carried "B" Co. wounded back to "The Strip"
Sgt Stokes related carrying "B" Co. wounded back to the "Strip" (on July 2nd '67)he'd been knocked off his feet as both him and the wounded soldier of "B" Co. went rolling off to the side of the dirt path.
1st Searchlight Battery
Ronald T Stokes

Recovering for a second he grabbed his helment and the wounded Marine, taking off running again till they reached the "Death Strip" and safety.
Upon gathering his breath while taking off his helment he noticed that what had knocked him off his feet earlier was an NVA bullet that had hit his helment and spun around inside between the helment and the helment liner and exited. This man was a true "Hero" as he made the trip many-a-time to carry "B" Company's wounded to the "Death Strip" and safety. There is no doubt in my mind that this Marine should have been recorded in the book "Operation Buffalo" as one of the many heros of that day. Submitted by: "Ducky" "A" Co. Arty Radio Op.
