In the above map. "Doc Mieu" is the North Vietnamese term for Gio Linh. Observing North Vietnamese troop deployment and noting the basic Headquarters Battalion routes, some traveled daily, it is obvious the battalion faced imminent danger every time a wheel touched the road.
In Vietnam, there were no "rear area's" and daily encounters with ambushes, mined roads, booby traps, weather, and complaining personnel at the bases being resupplied made these men war weary in their own way. Would you run these routes day-after-day for a cold beer?
