Smitty was a on an FO Team and I was the wire chief in Charlie Battery. His team was over run Smitty and Collins were KIA and Lt Restech was captured, MIA. His remains were found in 1984.

Harry Smith was born December 14, 1945 to Charles and Helena Smith; He is survived by three brothers and four sisters. After graduating from York Catholic High School in June of 1963, he quickly decided his immediate future, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps the following month.
After completing his required training, Harry deployed to Vietnam as part of the first United States contingent, coming ashore in the late summer of 1965. Harry was assigned to Battery C, 1st Battalion 12th Marines, part of a forward observation artillery team. Harry perished December 8, 1965 when his position was overrun by Viet Cong forces; he died defending his brother Marines. Harry was awarded the Purple Heart, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Military Merit Medal. Harry Smith was the first from York to die for his country in the Vietnam War; he was twenty years old at the time of his death.
